The COVID-19 outbreak has affected every aspect of life, from the workplace to the court system. Unfortunately, the coronavirus has also had an impact on jails and prisons throughout the United States.

On March 27, 2020, three inmates in the Orange County jail system tested positive for COVID-19. In addition to isolating and quarantining portions of the jail population in hopes of containing the spread of the outbreak, Sheriff Don Barnes announced the release of low-level offenders with less than 10 days left on their sentence and inmates with underlying health conditions deemed medically vulnerable by the CDC.

At the end of March, the second group of 33 inmates was granted early release up to 60 days before their scheduled date of release. The individuals in the second group were at a higher medical risk due to their age and medical vulnerability.

As of April 7, 331 inmates have been released from Orange County jails, all of whom are seniors or medically fragile. The overall jail population is down to 3,904 compared to 5,250 on March 6.

If you have a loved one who currently serving time in Orange County jail or any other jail in California for a non-violent offense or who has an underlying health condition that makes them more vulnerable to COVID-19, The Law Office of Jacqueline Goodman is here to help. Our firm can review your loved one’s case, determine their available legal options, and help them obtain early release or serve the rest of their sentence in home confinement.
